Maria Buckley's List of Lingo for Talking About Cases

Yesterday I came across an interesting post by Maria Buckley, author of The Lawyer's Essential Guide to Writing: Proven Tools and Techniques, listing various shorthand phrases for discussing patterns in case law. Here are a few of the phrases mentioned in Maria's post:

• "In Smith v. Jones, this Court squarely addressed. . . ."

• "The First Circuit has long recognized. . . ."

• "Although this Court has expressed a strong preference for . . . , it has frequently allowed . . . under similar circumstances."

• "The Supreme Court has not been sympathetic to. . . ."
